A sycamore may need clearance from a roof, road or neighbouring garden, dead branches removed, or a reduction to bring an established crown back into proportion with its setting. Those are different jobs. The amount removed and the points at which branches are shortened should be agreed before cutting starts.
A mature sycamore can reach a substantial size and carry a broad crown. Photographs should show the whole tree, not just the part crossing a boundary. They should also show the space below it and the route that branches would take to the road.
Hard cuts bring strong regrowth
Sycamore responds strongly after heavy cutting. Large stubs and an abruptly stripped crown can lead to dense new shoots around the cuts, leaving a tree that needs further management and does not resemble the balanced result the customer expected.
A measured reduction keeps the reason for the work in view. If the real problem cannot be solved without removing too much live crown, removal may be the clearer option. That decision depends on the individual tree, its condition and its position.
Plan for the crown and the ground
The crown is only half the job. Conservatories, sheds, planting and neighbouring fences can turn a simple-looking branch into a controlled lowering operation. Narrow side access also changes how cut material is moved and how long the work takes.
Send the full tree, the ground beneath it and the narrowest point on the route out. Clean-up is included. Whether timber is removed, cut to size or left is agreed for the job rather than assumed from the page.
Protection is address specific
A sycamore may be covered by a Tree Preservation Order, and trees in conservation areas are subject to controls. The fact that the species seeds freely or is common locally does not remove those requirements.
Check with the local planning authority before work begins when the status is unclear. The description submitted for consent or notice should match the work that will actually be carried out.
