What this service covers
Define the full fence run
A fencing quote should identify the exact run, approximate length, required height and the visible style that has been chosen. It should also say whether the job replaces an existing fence or starts on a clear boundary. A leaning section, several failed posts and a complete replacement are different jobs even when they occupy the same line.
Materials and details are agreed for the individual garden. We do not publish one panel, post, gravel board, treatment or fixing as the answer for every site. Ground level, wind exposure, retained walls, planting and access all affect what can sensibly be installed. The written quote is where the selected construction and finish are recorded.
If hedge removal, stump grinding, clearance, decking or landscaping is needed around the fence, those tasks are listed separately. This avoids assuming that an old hedge root, tree stump or pile of excavated soil is part of a basic fencing price. It also sets a sensible order where more than one service is booked.

Confirm the line and authority before work
The customer must confirm the fence line and that they have authority to replace or alter it. HM Land Registry explains that most title plans show general boundaries, not the exact legal line. A physical fence does not automatically prove ownership, and the position of posts or rails does not settle who owns it. If the line or responsibility is disputed, resolve that before installation. Woodside does not provide boundary surveys or legal advice.
Planning Portal guidance says a fence next to a highway used by vehicles, including the footpath of that highway, is normally limited to one metre without planning permission. Elsewhere the usual limit is two metres. Different controls can apply to listed buildings, their curtilage, conservation areas, Article 4 directions and planning conditions. The owner should check the local position where any limit or designation may apply.
Talk to the neighbour before work where access, planting or a shared feature is affected. Do not assume the old fence can be moved to a more convenient line. Give us a clear instruction that both identifies the physical run and protects anything that must remain on either side.

Check ground, access and buried services
Post work disturbs the ground, so tell us about known cables, pipes, drains, irrigation, lighting and previous foundations near the line. HSE guidance for excavation centres on planning the work, locating buried services and using a safe excavation method. A service drawing can help, but the actual site and any marked route still need attention.
Access determines how long sections, tools and removed material can be moved. Send photographs of the complete run, both ends, the narrowest gate and the route to the road. Steps, sharp turns, a route through the house and soft lawns all change the handling plan. Clear movable pots, furniture and stored items before the agreed start.
Retained trees, hedges and roots need to be visible in the quote photographs. A fence line that crosses a substantial root area may need a different arrangement or specialist input. We do not describe a standard solution before the ground and retained planting are seen.

Install to the agreed line and clear up
Before work starts, we confirm the fence run, agreed materials, height, levels, access and retained features. Old sections are removed only where the quote says so. The new work is set out along the confirmed line, with changes in ground level dealt with as agreed rather than hidden once the job is under way.
Clean-up is included in every job. We leave the agreed work area clear. The quote states whether old fencing, excavated material and packaging are removed or left in an agreed place, because those details depend on the individual job. Can you replace only the damaged part of a fence?
It depends on the condition and layout of the remaining run. Send wide photographs and closer views of the failed posts or panels. The quote will state whether a repair or a longer replacement is practical.
Do I need planning permission for garden fencing?
Many fences fall within permitted limits, but height, highways, listed buildings, conservation areas and local restrictions can change the answer. The owner should check with the local planning authority where any restriction may apply.
Can Woodside decide where my legal boundary is?
No. We install on the line confirmed by the customer. We do not provide boundary surveys or legal advice, and disputed boundaries should be resolved before work begins.
